Happy New Year.....

Hoping everyone enjoyed the Holiday Season to it's fullest. We missed some of you at the annual Holiday dinner, by the way, it was another great meal by BBQ on Wheels.

We should look at doing something for New Years Eve some year.... that would be nice a big New Years Square Dance, what better way to swing in the new year? (suggestion from Doug)

Looking forward to seeing everyone on Jan. 5th......

Holidays are in full swing......and I'm back....

It was so nice to hear from many of you that you do read my blog, and I am happy to keep it going just for you. Please share the link with your friends and fellow dancers, it is nice to have readers from other clubs share ideas.

For those of you who are wondering, Yes, Doug and I got married on Halloween..... wedding pic below. We had a very different type of wedding with different music, theme dances and square dancing. Berry Chumbley from the Napanee club came out and DJ'd for us and everyone seemed to really enjoy themselves. We had 93 people come out to watch us "Tie the Knot" and only 4% did not dress in Halloween costume... it was a great day.....

The Quinte Twirlers have now settled into their new home at the Westminster United Church. Although we had low numbers for the Annual Pie & Toy night, the Quinte West firemen still left with a pie and a truck load of toys for the toy drive.

We will be having our annual Christmas dinner and dance on Wednesday December 8th, catered by BBQ on Wheels again this year. These guys Rock! They make the best turkey dinner..... (oops, sorry Mom).... Tickets are $20 a person and the night kicks off at 6:30 pm. This will be our last dance for 2010.

This Friday night our caller Wayne Whatman will be in Napanee calling for the Pioneers, 7:30 p.m. This dance will be at the St. Mary Magdalene Church just off Bridge St. Admission is $6, there will be a sale of homemade treats and a clothing exchange. Refreshments to follow the dance.

Napanee Pioneers will be having their Christmas dinner and dance on Friday, December 10th. I will have to get more info on this one.

Until next time.....

Happy Halloween.....

The Quinte Twirlers had a great turn out for the Halloween Dance on Oct. 27th. Sorry we missed it, but our costumes cannot be  unveiled until tomorrow...  Great pictures Dave!

Nice New Home.....

We headed out last Wednesday for dancing in our new home. The church basement is nice and the floor is okay for dancing. It was nice to see everyone again.

This Wednesday night Oct 27th is a Halloween dance and they ask that everyone come dressed in costume. Unfortunately, Doug and I won't be able to make it this week. With our wedding on the weekend, we are doing much last minute planning.

I believe there is also a Halloween dance coming up in Napanee on the Friday night. They are dancing at the Westdale Public School at 7:30.

The Ghost Walk is behind us for another year. Thank you to all square dancers that came out to tour the graveyard at night with us. I was busy and didn't get to talk to anyone, other than students that were there on volunteer and assignments. It was a great night.

We will back to square dancing in November..... Until then, I often wonder if I am just wasting my time with this blog. If you are reading it, let me know.... if no one answers I will know I can delete it.

Thanks everyone

Quinte Twirlers are Moving.....

Tonight is our last dance at the Thurlow Community Center.... As of next week we will be dancing in the basement at the Westminster United Church at 1199 Wallbridge-Loyalist Road. I have been told it is approximately 1km north of the 401, on the west side. I have not seen it myself, but I have been told that it is really nice. Hopefully I will have the time to get out to a dance by next week.

EAGLES WANTED

The Eastern Ontario Square and Round Dance Association is seeking a limited number of experienced Plus dancers to form a demonstration team to be called the EOSARDA EAGLES.

This team will be called upon from time-to-time to perform at various locations across Eastern Ontario. However, it is not expected that every team member will be available to attend every event. The goal is to have a minimum of two full squares on the dance floor at any time.

We are also interested in procuring the services of any Callers who are interested in helping to mould the team into a premiere demonstration dance team.

If you are interested in helping to promote Square Dancing in our region, please contact Dave Western at 613 838-5428 or at dlwestern@yahoo.com

Demo Dance was Great!!!!

We had a great afternoon at the Ameliasburg Fair. Our dancers came out a little early to watch the entertainment on before us. As usual Grandpa's Goodtime Band gave a great show.
Some were worried that we might have to dance on this wagon.... lol

A big THANK YOU to Wayne and Brenda for traveling down to help us out with this little show, and to those dancers who came out for the hour. We gave a good show and spiked some interest. We had some folks give it a try and we got some great PR for the club.
We only had room for 2 squares under the band shell, we did just fine. We had an extra dancer or two to take over when some of us just to tired to go on..... Wayne really put us through our steps out there.
We had many people taking pictures of our show. I got a chance to speak to one of these paparazzi. He was a Loyalist student taking journalism. He was taking a lot of pictures of the caller. I introduced my self and found that he had no idea what this was taking place in front of him, he had never heard of square dancing. He was amazed at the callers ability to sing and instruct at the same time all the while keeping track of the dancers. He was quick to note the skill and focus it must take for such a hobby.

Near the end of our show, a group of young girls were sitting at the front of the audience. They were hoping for a chance to try this dance.
The gentlemen of our club were quick to grant their wish and the 4 young girls went through a whole set with the stage all to themselves. They loved every minute of it and their families took lots of pictures and video.

After we left the stage, I was glad to see that our participants didn't rush on home. Many made an afternoon of it and headed to the barns to have a look at the local wares, or took in some of the livestock show.
If only we had not been dancing opposite, the cattle ring. I was able to see at least 5 young square dancers in the ring showing their cows. They would have danced with us if they had the chance.
There were a few vendors on hand to supply a bite to eat after a bit of dancing.
Some headed over to watch the tractor pulls......
I was a little shocked to see the size of the tractors... lol
As I left the grounds I went through the pioneer village and noticed
many of our dancers still mingling about.

I am glad everyone had a great time and came out to show of our hobby that we love so much.

Just a note, this Wednesday night is our Harvest dance.
On Friday, October 8th we are all invited to the Old Tyme Square Dance at Allisonville Hall. Contact me for more details.

Ameliasburg Fair Demo Dance.... Saturday, October 2nd

Well we take the stage at 1:45 pm, we are up after Grandpa's Old Tyme Band, so we have a tough act to follow... lol

You can wear whatever you are comfortable in, however, your name badge will get you through the gates for free.

The next act takes the stage at 3:00 so we have an hour of dancing and 15 mins to clear the area.

There will be plenty of signs marking the route but if you go in off Coleman St. you will be right at the band shell almost.

Sept 15 - Open House #1

Wow! That was a fun night..... we had a few people come out and give square dancing a try tonight. I am sure that at least 6 of them will be back next week for the next open house.
If I keep laughing that hard, I won't have to do my sit ups on Wednesdays.... lol

On another note, many have been congratulating us (Doug & I) so I am assuming that these people are reading my blog. This is good news, it is nice to know someone besides myself are reading my words.

To answer some questions, yes, it is Doug & I that are getting married next month, so I am sure you will understand if we are not dancing more than once a week. We have tons of work to do for the wedding....

Thank you all who have passed on your well wishes..... for those who would like to follow along with the wedding plans, we have a blog and website for that too.....

Bring Your Friends

Tonight we had low numbers, but then it is so early in the year and folks are still finishing up their summer activities. We hope to see everyone else out next week and bring a friend.

Today we learned that our friend and long time member of the Quinte Twirlers is sick in the hospital, we all wish Elsie a speedy recovery.

It will soon be time to pay for our memberships again, dues are due by October 13th.

Did you know.................

It is recommended to exercise 45 minutes each day and dancing can be a cardiovascular & overall physical workout. If you pick up the pace, you can burn as many calories as walking, swimming or riding a bicycle. In one study, researchers attached pedometers to square dancers and found that their steps covered nearly 3km in a single evening of dancing.

So come on out and get some exercise......

Wow! Did this summer just fly by or what? September 8th is just around the corner... are we all ready to kick up our heels?

Our executive will meet this week and get things ready to go for next Wednesday night. I have been handing out business cards and post cards with the free notice on them as well as posting posters where ever I can.

Hope to see everyone on Wednesday night...... can't wait...

Mid August Already? September is just around the corner......

Up coming dances in our area, are just the ones with the Napanee club. They have one more dance at the Mission on Water St. August 17th and a demo in Candem East on the 29th.

At our last club meeting the chance to set up a display at the Quinte Mall for registration week was kiboshed, so our club is starting up again on September 8th.

We have free nights for beginners on Sept. 15th and 22nd. Bring a friend and make sure you have put up the poster you were given in May.

The next 79 days are going to be very busy for us, we are going to have to put square dancing on the back burner..... I have less than 3 months to put together an October wedding and it is starting to get hectic.....

See ya all on a dance floor real soon.....

Another Week....

A week without square dancing is almost like a week without my morning coffee.... well not quite.... but close.

A week has past since the Rodeo dance and I am still getting comments on photos and the rodeo and the dance.... great we started a buzz..... that's what it is all about. After the recent events in Tweed this spring it is nice to see the community bouncing back and organizers say that the Canadian Cowboy Association along with the Dodge Ram Rodeo Organization were pleased with the setting and the results of the weekend. this was the first year for the rodeo in Tweed and they could be coming back on a yearly basis. The owner of the park thought our numbers were low, as most times when there is a dance in his hall, it is packed... but this was a square dance not a DJ dance so it makes it a little different.....

The newspapers all had positive things to say about the rodeo and that it served up old fashion entertainment. Well square dancing fits right into that bill and I believe they will have us back next year. We need to find away to get those people to stop and dance that are passing through.

On to the more current issues..... dancing this week.....
Tonight at 7 p.m. there is a square dance and corn roast at the home of Marg and Elwood Hughes.... we cannot make it this year. Doug has a ball game and I have to get this assignment done for my class.... ahhh we went last year and it was a lot of fun.... real sorry to miss it....

Tuesday August 10 there will be dancing in Napanee at 59 Water St, the Morning Star Mission......... again I wish I had time to make it out, but this week is insanely busy...... hope the cool weather holds out and you all have a good time....

As for me, I have assignments to do and a wedding to prepare for...... and painting ahhh so much painting....

Take care until next time

Tweed Stampede Rodeo Rocks!!!!

I was really thinking that we didn't pick a good year to start this thing as so many dancers are out of town or away at weddings.... but I was so wrong.....

We only had 3 squares show up, but what a day we had and everyone was happy and visiting and so welcomed.

Those who made a day of it and enjoyed the rodeo as well are already making plans for next year. The crew at Trudeau Park put on a great event and the Dodge Rodeo crew really gave us a show. It was awesome!

I was enjoying the rodeo so much, I didn't want to leave to go and set up for the dance. If any of our readers our rodeo fans, you got to book your spot for camping next year and take it all in....... they are coming back!

I am so grateful to those dancers who took the time to come out and join us. The air conditioning was on but the door was open so that other people would come in, it wasn't as cool as some of us would have liked it, but it was cooler than outside. The dance was 4 hours long and some people brought lunches and drinks and made a picnic out of it. Others found food vendors on the grounds and the bar was set up to sell pop and water.

Wayne did a great job putting us through our moves, even mixing it up doing some pretty strange things. Our guys and gals did a wonderful job of grabbing those spectators that came it to have a look and getting them on the floor. We even had a husband come in looking for his wife and seemed truly amazed to find her out on the floor dancing like a pro.

During breaks many of us would go out to the balcony overlooking Stoco lake and enjoy the music from the live stage down below, we had a perfect view. Wayne had to come out and investigate when he saw people were dancing on the balcony, but not square dancing...... we couldn't have asked for a better day.

The Trudeau family has offered us the room again for next year.... we need to hear from you. Do we do this again next year and make it into a summer dance? If you were there give me some input... I am looking for ideas, Doug and I had a blast and it was great. Even Marko wants to come back next year and spend the weekend with us just to go to the rodeo.... Talk to me people..... need to hear everyone's ideas.

I have more pictures up on picasaweb.google.com   just search for Tweed Stampede Dance

Thank you and Yellow Rock Y'All

Trudeau Park has been in the news lately, and for most locals we understand this is a wonderful park. The incident on Victoria Day weekend was an isolated event. It just so happens that every year for as long as I can remember Trudeau Park is host to a huge party weekend for young people, (19-25) and there is lots of loud music and it is for only that weekend. We have been assured that this weekend it only families and rodeo loving campers. The square dance and the rodeo do not take place within the campgrounds. The dance is in the banquet hall which is rented every weekend for weddings pretty much all summer. It is a beautiful park and we do hope that one incident is not enough to keep someone away.

What is a Square Dancer?

A Square Dancer is a person who knows his left from his right, but occasionally forgets it.

A Square Dancer is someone who has learned to do as he is told (by the caller), but doesn't always do it.

He is fanatical in his search for a good time, traveling miles in all kinds of weather, going places he would never go otherwise, spending all night on his feet which were killing him all day, and smiling happily all the time.

A Square Dancer speaks a language all his own. He calls his partner his taw, his honey, his date, darling or pretty little thing, and he promenades, sashays, weaves, circulates, swings, bends, hinges, trades, spins, circles, explodes, folds and cross folds.

He learns his dancing thru and thru: right and left thru, pass thru, turn thru, step thru - and he must be agile enough to do such unlikely things as box the gnat, shoot the star, slip the clutch, pass the ocean and sweep a quarter.

If this description fits you, don't worry. Although it is practically incurable, this disease is not at all harmful, and most square dancers have a strong desire to infect other members of the community.

Welcome to Square Dancing.....

(just a little something I found while I was cleaning out my office this weekend...)

Country Roads Jamboree in Napanee

The Napanee Pioneers did a demo Square Dance at the Jamboree this weekend, reports are that things went very well.

They only had 7 couple turn up for the dance, but the crowd got involved and many flyers and business cards were handed out.  Hoping some of these folks come back in the fall as beginners.

Why to get out there and promote our favorite hobby Pioneers.

I hear that Berry didn't win the singing contest, but waiting to hear where he placed.

Next dance on my calendar is in Napanee on Tuesday the 20th. Do you know of one sooner? Please share.

Hey Everyone in Square Dance Land......

It has been way too hot this week to even think of Square Dancing.... yet we are off to Napanee tonight for a spin, hope they have air conditioning.

Gail & Gary took in the Track II to Tweed weekend, and would like to share the experience with us.

"Gary and I had a super time at Track Two Tweed this past weekend. The fun and laughs never stopped. The dancing was fast and challenging for us but it was a super experience. Don Moger and Tim Crawford couldn't say enough good things about the location. They loved it so much that they have booked it for the next 3 years. 2011 is already over half full with pre-registered dancers, which includes us. Couples were there from North Bay, Elmira, Milton, Ottawa, Peterborough, Kingston, Vermont and more. It was enjoyed by everyone."

If you missed it, get your name on the list for next year. By the sounds of it, you better move fast. You can reach Tim Crawford at CALLERTIM@aol.com

Hope everyone is staying cool, and until next time...... Yellow Rock Y'all

Square Dancing in Quinte Facebook Group

http://www.facebook.com/#!/group.php?gid=128311260532681

I started a Facebook Group for all us Square Dancers in the area that use Facebook. For me my morning coffee isn't the same without facebook and keeping up with all my friends and family. I have some pictures and videos posted on this group.

I have been working on the Tweed Stampede Rodeo. We will be in the banquet hall upstairs overlooking Stoco Lake. It really is a nice place with wood dance floor. We have asked that the bar remains closed, you can bring your own drinks or there will be refreshment stands on the grounds.

If you are coming for the dance only, show your club badge at the door and it will be $10 per person. If you want to see the events at the park (Rodeo) you can get a day pass for $20 at the gate and this will get you into everything but the big concerts at 8:00 pm.

If you are a camper and you want to take in the whole weekend, there is special pricing for this that is handled by the Rodeo organizers. Anyone with a Rodeo pass, this includes the Square Dance. Only those who are coming just for the dance need to pay at the door, anyone with a Rodeo pass the dance is free as part of the Rodeo. The Dance is for 4 hours.

http://www.tweedstampede.com/

This weekend is Track Two To Tweed. I would love it if someone that is going could please post an update on here and the Facebook Group for those of us who are unable to attend.

Next Tuesday (July 6) we will be dancing in Napanee.... hope to see you there.

Until next time

A great article on Square Dancing......

Well it's Tuesday morning and I think we will be heading to a Mission in Napanee tonight to join some friends for a square dance, hope others will come along too.....

Doug was web surfing and found this article in the Wall Street Journal, of all places on square dancing. I would copy it here, but that would be some sort of copyright infringement, so here is the link. It is well worth the read. As some of the discussion board writers point out I don't think the reporter did much research on square dancing, but either way it makes sense.

http://online.wsj.com/article/SB126092621402692993.html#articleTabs%3Darticle

We have heard back from the Ameliasburg fair board and we have been invited to do an hour long dance demo at the fair. This will be on Saturday, October 2, hope we can get at least 2 squares out to dance with us..... more details to follow on this.

I hope to see all my dancing friends throughout the summer...

Until the next time....

These teens really like to get out and kick up their heels at the Old Tyme Dances. They make it so much fun.

Our Annual Apple Blossom Dance packed the hall.

These are our graduates for 2010. Well the ones that could make it out for cake that is...

Another Season of Dance comes to a Close....

It has been some time since I have written in this blog, sorry about that, but life and my computer tend to have their own agendas from time to time.

The Quinte Twirlers had a great year from Sept to May. We had a good crowd each week and we thank our members for being there this year.

Our Apple Blossom Dance was a great success again this year. We had scheduled Norm Wilcox from Peterborough as our guest caller, however he was unable to attend due to illness. Everyone at the Quinte Twirlers Club wishes Norm a speedy recovery. Dave Williamson filled in for Norm and did an excellent job, we thank Dave for being there and for making it a great afternoon.

Doug and I made an appearance at the Trenton Squares and Pairs Club for the annual Valentines Day dance. Even though we are not completely done our "Plus" teachings we managed to make it through, with a little help from our friends.... we had a great night.

We also tried to get off to dance with the Napanee Pioneers Club as much as possible on Friday evenings. We always have a good time with our friends in Napanee and they have a 50's / 60's dance that is just "Out of this World, Man.... Groovy". Even Elvis makes an appearance for this one!

In April we headed up to Peterborough for the Spring Spree and as usual it was a blast. We have such a great time, however with 2 rooms (2 levels) of dance to choose from, it is so hard to decide. We found ourselves running from room to room in between calls. It's all in fun....

A group from our club headed out to the Alzheimer's Volunteer Luncheon and did a little show for them. Many in the audience enjoyed the dancing and had questions for the dancers. This is an important part of the club. We have to keep getting out there and promoting Square Dancing when ever possible, besides it fun too....

We even took time out this spring to head over the bridge to Prince Edward County. A little hamlet outside of Wellington called Allisonville. There isn't much left, but once a month the Allisonville hall is hoppin with an old time fiddle band and old time square dancing. Mind you we don't enjoy it as much as modern square dance, but the crowd we dance with is so different. I think there was a 6 year old in one square and yes she knew her stuff. We always have a good time at these dances, even though we don't know the moves, they teach as they go....

We are now on break for the summer.... but not really..... there are a few places you can find us dancing and I will fill you all in on this shortly.... I will also post some photos.

Until I see you all again.
